A curious and interesting 'limes-falsum' with two portraits of Caracalla
Lot 1163
Caracalla, 198-217. Sestertius (Orichalcum, 30 mm, 17.29 g, 12 h), a contemporary cast imitation. M AVREL ANTONINVS PIVS AVG BRIT Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Caracalla to right, seen from behind. Rev. M AVREL ANTONINVS PIVS AVG BRIT Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Caracalla to right, seen from behind. A curious and interesting 'limes-falsum'. Somewhat corroded, otherwise, fine.

'Limes-falsa' were contemporary casts from Roman coins which were likely produced by local authorities in times of shortage of monetary supply from the central government. This is a particularly odd example, as it combines two obverses of Caracalla to a sestertius with the imperial portrait on both sides of the coin: thus, no games of heads or tails with this coin!
